Lyrics from Another Kite to Fly

3.

IF TIME WERE A
HIGHWAY

IF TIME WERE A HIGHWAY
I'd buy the fastest car
I'd buy the fastest car and I would drive.
I'd drive until
you were out of sight
until you were nothing but a memory.
IF TIME WERE A HIGHWAY
IF TIME WERE A HIGHWAY

If wishes could be bought
I would beg, steal and borrow
and we never would have met
and gone would be the sorrow.
IF TIME WERE A HIGHWAY
IF TIME WERE A HIGHWAY
I'd buy the fastest car

I'd get in and turn the key.
I'd put my foot down on the gas
and soon enough the pain would be
all in the past, all in the past.

And if wishes could be bought
I would beg, steal and borrow
and we never would have met
and gone would be the sorrow.
IF TIME WERE A HIGHWAY
IF TIME WERE A HIGHWAY
I'd buy the fastest car

7. TWILIGHT

It's not quite day
It's not quite night
It's not quite over
There's still some light
But it's not as bright as it was
It's no longer love.

It's not quite a memory
It's not quite real
It's not quite ended
There's still things we feel
But it's not what it was
It's not quite over
But it's no longer love

CH:  The morning can light the sky
like it did long ago for you and I
But now we¹ve both come to realize
It's the time of love
called the TWILIGHT

It's not quite cold
It's not quite warm
We're not quite here
Not quite gone
One by one stars shine above
It's not quite over
But it's no longer love

SHADOWS ON THE
WALL

I'm sitting in my kitchen
watching shadows grow
I'm waiting for the phone to ring
but it don't

I'm trying not to think
of the reasons she hasn't called
and there's darkness in my soul
that's getting deeper
like the SHADOWS ON THE WALL

The keys that I gave her
weren't only to my door
I never opened up myself
like this before

I picture her embracing a stranger
their clothes start to fall
and the darkness in my soul
is getting deeper
like the SHADOWS ON THE WALL

Yes, the darkness in my soul
is getting deeper, and deeper
like the SHADOWS ON THE WALL

ONLY THE RIVERS
RUN FREE

You say your country's beautiful
with gently rolling hills
and pristine beaches,
mountains high and still
but the leaders of your nation
rule by decree
yes, this land is lovely but
ONLY THE RIVERS RUN FREE

You say it's paradise
so why does no one smile
fear clouds the face
of every woman, man and child
they've been hunted and terrified
and robbed of their dreams
yes, your country's beautiful but
ONLY THE RIVERS RUN FREE

The shadows loom
over the mountains
for years they've darkened the land
A new born baby
clings to his mother
and she holds him as close as she can

The only lights that shine
are from the stars at night
the only songs heard
are from the birds in the sky
and when the rains come
it mingles with teardrops it seems
here in this sad nation where
ONLY THE RIVERS RUN FREE

THE CORNER OF
GUNHILL AND HELL

My parents were wedlocked
inside their own prison
when I arrived on the scene.
I think they believed
that somehow I could free them
but I was just a baby.

A moments diversion
was all that I gave them
then they drifted
back to their cell.
And left me to grow up
alone in the city ...
On THE CORNER OF GUNHILL
AND HELL.

CH:
And I learnt that a kiss
Is a means of persuasion.
A lie is a tool you can learn to use well.
I learnt to survive
by divorcing my feelings.
There on THE CORNER
OF GUNHILL AND HELL

Well the school that they sent me
was dank and decrepit
and home to an occasional rat.
My classmates were losers,
loners and outcasts
and there, each day we sat.

I thought about leaving
when I realized
nothing meant more than hearing the bell.
so I ended up back where I was familiar,
THE CORNER OF GUNHILL
AND HELL

EVEN THE STRONGEST
OF TREES

The roots go deep for who I am
from father to son
from the child to the man
and I've done you wrong
but I know I can do right
EVEN THE STRONGEST OF TREES
can lean towards the light

In this world I thought that
I had my place
but in my heart I was lost
'til I saw your face
you've been my inspiration and
and you've been my guide

CH:
EVEN THE STRONGEST OF TREES
can lean toward the light
EVEN THE STRONGEST OF TREES
can lean toward the light

Well my father died a lonely old man
he tried to make me
in his image but I ran
straight into the darkness
but now I think I'm alright

CH:
EVEN THE STRONGEST OF TREES
can lean toward the light
EVEN THE STRONGEST OF TREES
can lean toward the light

WATCH OUT (who you
make your heroes)

I've got a message
for all of you kids
turn off your T.V's
and listen to this
don't you believe
everything that your told
we're just a product
and we've got to get sold

CH:  WATCH OUT
who you make your heroes
WATCH OUT
who becomes your stars.
Take a good long look
before you get yourselves hooked
and WATCH OUT
I say WATCH OUT

Well we're a part
of your everyday life
the CD's, the movies
all of the hype
but money runs this huge machine
we take your cash
and manufacture your dreams

CH:  WATCH OUT
who you make your heroes.
WATCH OUT
who becomes your stars.
Listen carefully
before you start to believe
and WATCH OUT
I say WATCH OUT

Well you can run with a football
to make it rich
or play in a band
or use your fists
you can be the president
of the U.S.A.
and still be a crook
no matter what you say ...

12.

ANOTHER KITE TO FLY

My pillow seems to ask me
why I'm all alone tonight
And I say that girl's like the North wind
And me, I'm but a kite

She brings me down
when she's moving low
and up when she's feeling high
But tonight she's found
ANOTHER KITE TO FLY

I picture her face in my mind
but sadness now it brings
'cause every time she beckoned me
she just pulled on a string

And like a little boy
I'd run to her,
my arms open wide
but tonight she's found
ANOTHER KITE TO FLY
